Description

From Ray Charles in the mid-1940s to KC and the Sunshine Band in the late ‘70s, Florida has a rich soul music heritage that’s been overlooked.

Event Details

Did you know that the great duo Sam and Dave (“Soul Man,’’ “Hold On, I’m Comin’’’) came out of Miami?

Our second Florida Humanities Council speaker of the year is John Capouya, a journalist and professor at the University of Tampa who moonlights as a pop culture history writer.

Drawing from his book, "Florida Soul," Capouya will play classic R&B, show vintage and contemporary photos of soul greats, and share his research in a presentation that’s as entertaining as it is educational.

Come hear about the lesser-known musical history of the Florida soul music scene by attending the lecture at the Panama City Center for the Arts on March 8, at 6pm (doors open at 5:30pm). Light refreshments will be available.

Tickets cost $10 for non-members and $5 for members.

More about the speaker:
John Capouya teaches journalism and nonfiction narrative in the undergraduate and graduate writing programs at the University of Tampa. He also works with private writing clients.

During his journalism career he was an editor at "Newsweek" and "SmartMoney" magazines, as well as "New York Newsday" and "The New York Times".

He is the author of three nonfiction books including "Gorgeous George," a biography of the flamboyant wrestler and pop culture figure that is being adapted into a feature film. His most recent book, "Florida Soul," traces the evolution of R&B and funk in that state, from Ray Charles to KC and the Sunshine Band. The Wall Street Journal called that book "compelling,'' adding that "Mr. Capouya is to be commended.''
