Tallahassee takes its position as Florida’s grande dame seriously, so you can imagine that Fourth of July celebrations here really take the cake! Here are five fun ways to celebrate America’s birthday in Florida’s capital.

Tom Brown Park is the venue for the city’s largest Independence Day bash,Celebrate America 4th of July at Tom Brown Park. Activities start at 5 p.m. with arts and crafts, children’s activity area with bounce houses and water slides, and the Kiwanis Miller Lite Beer Garden opening. A welcome ceremony follows at 5:15 p.m. Expect food and drink and live music, and of course, fireworks show to close the day. There’s free StarMetro shuttle service to and from the park as well. Just don’t bring your pets (unless they are service animals), fireworks, alcohol, grills or personal tents in spectator areas.

Residents of Southwood hold an annual Celebration of Red, White and Blue parade, and celebration that starts at 10:30 a.m. with a golf cart parade from Baringer Hill Drive to Tot Lot. No golf cart? No problem! You can walk, ride your bike or tow your wagon. Just make sure you and your vehicle are in red, white and blue. Enjoy food trucks and fireworks at 9:10 p.m. at Central Park Lake. 

For a quaint waterfront experience of the holiday, head to Sopchoppy for its Annual Fourth of July celebration, which includes the Bill Stephens Fourth of July Parade, canoe race, music, arts and crafts, vendors and a gorgeous fireworks display over the waterfront after sunset. The event will be held at Myron B. Hodge City Park. 

Fitness buffs can celebrate the Fourth their own way—by running a virtual 5K and raising money for Homes for Our Troops, an organization that builds houses for severely injured veterans. Organized by 2018 Virtual Races: Only $10! Choose Your Favorites! - Tallahassee, this race is one you run virtually. This means you complete the 5K on your own any time in July 2018 and submit your time to the organization, which will ship your medal directly to you. You can choose your course and time yourself. Of the $18 it costs for the medal, bib, and shipping, 15 percent goes to the charity.
